The ABC House thanks you for being a part of the annual Fall Foliage Walk and 5K Run. Not only is the Fall Foliage Walk our largest fundraiser, but it has become an Amherst tradition. This year was the 40th event, and it was a great day. Students and walkers who will be getting pledges should continue to collect them and send them to the PO Box listed on this website. You can also conue to ask that friends and family sponsor you online, and you will receive an email confirmation! We will announce the winner of the bike from Hampshire Bike Exchange once all of the pledges are tallied. Thanks to all who volunteer on the day of the event!

The Amherst Committee for A Better Chance will hold its 40th Annual Fall Foliage Event on Saturday, October 22, 2011, including the Family Style Walk and a 5k Competitive Run at 10 am. A barbecue lunch will be served. An Amherst tradition, the event has annually brought together hundreds of residents and school children to admire the diverse colors of the foliage while they walk for diversity in the community.
The Walk and 5k Run is Amherst ABC’s biggest fundraiser, providing living and school expenses for the ABC scholars: young men of color identified by the national ABC program for their leadership potential. They board at the ABC House on North Prospect Street under the tutelage of Resident Director Talib Sadiq and Assistant RD Tyson Rose while they attend Amherst Regional High School. Operating costs for the program total the equivalent of a middle class family income, about $100,000.
This year, organizers are offering two ways to participate:
- The Family Style Walk – The 5k route, which begins and ends on the Amherst Town Common, is geared for families and young children. Start time is 10:00 am.
- 5k Competitive Run – Following the same course as the Family Style Walk, the 5k Fun Run is a brisk jog through some of Amherst's most scenic areas. Registration begins at 9 a.m. and the 5k run begins at 10:30 a.m.
3-Mile Walk/5K Run Route
The Fall Foliage Walk and 5k Competitive Run will start at Kendrick Park this year. Registrationwill begin at 9 a.m. at the Park which is on North Pleasant Street, at the north end of Amherst's business district. It will head down North Pleasant Street, then cross the Town Common and cross Route 9. Then it will run east and then south partly circling the Amherst College campus. It will then enter College woodland, highlighted by a beautiful view over the Pelham Hills. Finally, it will follow the Norwottuck Rail Trail back to the College campus. The finish line for the 5k Run will be at the Octagon, on the campus. The finish for the walkers will be on the Town Common, where food and festivities will take place.
